A Guide To Wedding Flowers
A Guide to Wedding Flowers
Every wedding needs to have flowers but not every bride knows exactly what types of flowers she will need or what is the best way to go about making the flower arrangements. If you hired a wedding planner, great! With a little information about your personal style and your favorite flowers, he or she can go ahead and take care of everything. But what do you do if you aren’t going to hire a wedding planner.
The first thing to do is to figure out and write down a list of what you need the flowers for. For instance, there are personal wedding flowers. These are bouquets for the bride, bridesmaids, corsages for the mothers of the bride and groom, and boutonnieres for the men–the groom, father of the groom and bride, and groomsmen.
Flowers are going to be needed for the ceremony and it will make a big difference as to whether you are having a small, simple wedding in a small church or at home, or a huge wedding in a large cathedral. Flowers are also usually needed for the reception–some to be used as centerpieces for the tables, some at the guest book table and maybe even some at the cake table.
You need to start thinking about flowers and about who you want to hire to be your florist well before the wedding. In fact, most people get their florist at least six months to a year in advance. And, the earlier the better. The florist may have several weddings already scheduled for the same day and be unable to meet your needs. Ask around for which florists in the area are considered the best and seek out recommendations. While many large flower shops may have a specific wedding flower planner, in most small operations, the owner does everything.
Go and visit florists and ask to see photos of weddings that they have done and if they will give you references. If they are reluctant to give references, go elsewhere. Make sure the florist has an understanding of your budget for flowers for the wedding and that you have discussed what you like or do not like. Once you have decided on a particular florist or flower designer, you might be asked to sign a contract. You will undoubtedly be asked for a deposit.
It depends on your budget and the size of the wedding but most wedding flowers run around $1000. You will probably need to make a deposit of around ten percent. If you are on a very tight budget, you can see if anything can be done to save money, such as combining flowers for the wedding and the reception. See if the florist will transport them between the two locations or if you can find a friend to help out.
You want your flowers to be beautiful but you don’t need to overdo it by having flowers everywhere. Make sure that you communicate well with your florist and that your flowers are exactly what you want in terms of kinds, quantities and colors.
